Cash Flow: what actually came in and went out
Money in and out of the bank, month by month, from your bank lines rather than your invoices.
Profit and cash are not the same thing. You can invoice a lot in March and still be short of cash in March if nobody has paid yet. The Cash Flow report looks only at your bank lines: the deposits and withdrawals from imported statements or bank feeds.
- In the menu on the left, choose Reports.
- Choose Performance, then Cash Flow.
- Pick the period at the top.
- Read one row per month.
| Month | The month. With All Time chosen, the list starts at the month of your first invoice, credit note, bill or bank line and runs to this month. |
|---|---|
| Inflows | Every deposit in the month. |
| Outflows | Every withdrawal in the month. |
| Net | Inflows minus Outflows: did more come in than go out? |
| Cumulative | The running total of Net since the first month shown. It starts at zero at the start of the period, so it is the change in your bank over the period rather than your balance. |
Good to know: Every bank line counts, matched or not, except lines you marked Ignored. The Bank Ledger and the Balance Sheet leave Ignored lines out in the same way, so the three always agree. Money moved between two of your own accounts shows as an outflow from one and an inflow to the other. Owner contributions and draws, loans and card payouts are real money in and out, so they count here too, even though they are not on the P&L.
Tip: Read this one every Monday. A month with a negative Net is a month you paid out more than you took in, whatever the P&L says.
