What card payments cost, and who pays

The rate, where to see it for any amount, and the rules on passing it on.

A Canadian card costs 2.9% + 60¢ a payment all in — Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ plus Todah's 30¢ a payment, with no percentage on top — taken out of the payment as it is made. Cards issued outside Canada add 0.8%, and a currency conversion adds 2%. Settings → Getting paid shows the exact figure for any amount you type in, so you can decide invoice by invoice.

Passing the fee on: in Canada a credit-card surcharge is capped at 2.4% or your actual cost, whichever is lower, needs 30 days' notice to the card networks, may never be applied to debit, and is banned in Quebec. Todah does not add surcharges. Instead, "Let this client pay by card" on each invoice lets you leave the button off large jobs you would rather have paid by transfer.

Fees are not refundable, and every invoice that offers card payment carries a line saying so to the client.
