Turn card payment off (or on) for one invoice

Leave the Pay button off a single invoice, for example a large job you would rather have paid by e-transfer, without turning card payments off for everyone.

  • Changing your mind

There are two switches. Settings → Payments decides whether your business takes cards at all. Let this client pay by card, on each invoice, decides whether that one invoice offers it. Card fees are a percentage, so on a large invoice you may prefer a bank transfer or cheque.

Step by step

  1. Open the invoice: New Invoice for a new one, or Edit on a draft's row in your Invoices list.
  2. Under the Total, find Let this client pay by card. It is ticked to begin with.
  3. Untick it. The line changes to "This client will not see a Pay button".
  4. Choose Create Invoice (or Save Changes), and send it as usual.

On an invoice you have already sent

Whether the client can pay by card is the one thing you can still change after sending. The option is on sent invoices that still have money owing, once your workspace is accepting card payments. It is not offered while a card dispute on the invoice is open or lost (Disputed or Dispute Lost); card payment stays paused on those.

  1. In the menu on the left, choose Invoices.
  2. On the invoice's row, open the three-dot More actions button and choose Turn Off Card Payment (or Turn On Card Payment if it is off).
  3. Read the question and choose OK.
  4. A message confirms "Card payment turned off for this invoice" (or turned on). Nothing is emailed; the Pay button on the invoice's page, in reminders and in your client portal follows the new setting straight away.

What your client sees

  • The invoice email has no Pay this invoice online button.
  • The card-fee line is left off the invoice.
  • If they open a link to the invoice they were sent earlier, the page says "(your business) has asked to be paid by the method shown on this invoice rather than by card." and has no Pay now button. A checkout cannot be started from that link.
  • In your client portal, that invoice has no Pay button.
  • On your Invoices list, Share Payment Link is not offered for that invoice.

Changing your mind

On a draft, tick Let this client pay by card again and choose Save Changes. On a sent invoice, choose Turn On Card Payment on its row. The Pay button returns, on the same payment link as before.

Good to know: You see the Let this client pay by card box once your workspace is accepting card payments.

Tip: Tell your client how to pay instead. Your payment instructions (for example your e-transfer address) can go in the invoice notes or footer.
