Create your account and sign in
How to open a new Todah workspace, confirm your email, sign in (including with two-step sign-in) and sign out.
Creating an account in Todah creates two things at once: your workspace (the private space for your business's books) and your own sign-in, as the workspace owner. You do not need a card to start on Free.
Before you start
- An email address you can open. Todah sends your password resets and billing notices there.
- Each email address can belong to one Todah sign-in only. If you already have one, sign in with it rather than creating another.
- A password of at least 8 characters. The sign-up form shows this rule under the Password box.
Step by step: create your workspace
- Go to todah.ca and choose to sign in, or open the sign-in page directly.
- Choose the Create company tab at the top of the box. The title changes to Create your company.
- Type your Company name and Your name.
- Under Choose a plan, pick Free, Business or Enterprise. If you are not sure, pick Free; you can change plan at any time.
- Type your Email and a Password. Choose the eye button beside the password to see what you typed.
- If you would like occasional product news from Todah, tick the box. It is unticked unless you tick it.
- Choose Create company.
What each box means
| Company name | Your business's name. It becomes the workspace's name and the display name on your documents. You can change the display name later in Settings → Business. |
|---|---|
| Your name | Your own name, shown to your team. |
| Choose a plan | Which plan you would like. Each choice shows its current price. Every new workspace starts on Free; picking a paid plan here notes your choice, and you pay for it in Settings → Plan & Billing when you are ready. Nothing is charged at this step. |
| Your sign-in and where Todah writes to you. | |
| Password | At least 8 characters. A shorter one is caught before the form is sent, with Use at least 8 characters for your password. |
| Send me occasional product news from Todah | Optional. New features and guides. You can turn it off later in Settings → Account & Security. |
What happens next
- If you picked Free, Todah opens your new workspace on the Dashboard straight away.
- If you picked Business, a Welcome to Todah screen says your workspace is ready on Free and no card has been charged. Choose Choose Business now to go straight to Settings → Plan & Billing and pay, or Start on Free and upgrade there later.
- If you picked Enterprise, the same screen explains that Enterprise is set up with you through the Contact page, and Go to your workspace opens your workspace on Free meanwhile.
- Todah emails you a welcome message with a Confirm my email button, three first steps, and what your plan includes. The confirm link works for 48 hours. Choosing it opens Todah.
- Your workspace starts with GST at 5% set up as your default sales tax and a starter list of expense categories. You can change both.
Good to know: Confirming your email is how Todah knows password resets and billing notices reach you. Until you confirm, Settings → Account & Security shows an Email Confirmation card. If the link has expired or the email is lost, choose Resend Confirmation Email on that card for a new link. If the sign-in page ever says Please confirm your email address before signing in., a Resend Confirmation Email button appears there too: type your email in the Email box first, then choose it.
- Open the sign-in page. The Sign in tab is chosen and the title says Welcome back.
- Type your Email and Password.
- Choose Sign in. Todah opens on the Dashboard, or on the page a link sent you to.
Your first sign-in with a temporary password
If someone added you to their team, they gave you a temporary password. You must replace it the first time you sign in, before you can use Todah.
- Sign in with your email and the temporary password, as above.
- Todah shows Choose your own password. Type a new password of at least 8 characters in New password.
- Type the same password again in Confirm new password.
- Choose Save Password. The app opens, and from now on you sign in with your new password.
Good to know: A temporary password works for 72 hours and for that first sign-in only. If it has run out, the sign-in page says Your temporary password has expired. Choose Forgot your password? to set a new one yourself, or ask the person who invited you to choose Resend Invite on the Team page. See I can't sign in.
Sign in with two-step sign-in
If you have turned on two-step sign-in, your password is only the first step. After you choose Sign in, the box changes to One more step.
- Open your authenticator app on your phone and find Todah.
- Type the 6-digit code it shows into the Code box.
- Choose Sign in.
- That code is not right: check you are reading the Todah entry in the app and that your phone's clock is set automatically, then type the current code.
- That code has already been used: each code works once. Wait for the app to show the next one.
- Lost your phone: type one of your recovery codes into the same box instead. Each recovery code works once, and Todah warns you when you use one so you can set two-step sign-in up again.
Sign out
- At the bottom of the menu on the left, choose Sign Out. You return to the sign-in page.
Tip: On a phone, the menu is folded away. Choose the button with three lines at the top left to open it, then Sign Out at the bottom.
Be careful: Sign out when you finish on a shared or public computer. Anyone who uses the same browser afterwards could otherwise open your books.
